A surface grinder is a precision machining tool used to produce flat surfaces on a workpiece. This machine ensures that surfaces are smooth, flat, and free of imperfections, making it crucial for achieving high-quality finishes and tight tolerances. Surface grinders are widely used in various industries, including automotive, aerospace, and tool and die making.

Surface grinders offer several advantages, including high precision and accuracy. They provide a smooth, flat surface finish, improving both the appearance and functionality of the workpiece.

Surface grinders are also extremely versatile and capable of handling various materials — including metals, ceramics, and composites.

Brown & Sharpe 6-12

The Brown & Sharpe 6-12 surface grinder is designed for precision grinding. It features a 6" x 12" table, providing ample space for different workpieces. The machine's sturdy construction ensures stability and accuracy, making it ideal for high-precision applications. Additionally, the grinding wheel's adjustable speed and feed rate allow for fine-tuning to achieve the desired surface finish or dimensional accuracy.

Sharp 6-12

The Sharp 6-12 surface grinder also features a 6" x 12" table, offering similar capabilities to the Brown & Sharpe model. The Sharp 6-12's high-quality components and precise controls guarantee consistent performance with excellent surface finishes for any project.

How Does a Surface Grinder Work?

The operator secures the workpiece on the table, ensuring it is properly aligned and clamped. The grinding wheel is then positioned above the workpiece.

As the table moves in a reciprocating or rotary motion, the grinding wheel's abrasive surface comes into contact with the workpiece, gradually wearing down the material to create a flat, smooth finish. This process can be repeated with different grinding wheels or settings to achieve the desired surface quality.
